NORWALK, Iowa -- A Norwalk Verizon Wireless store is helping families with kids who need a new backpack.

On Saturday morning, the Norwalk store gave out about 250 backpacks. The company gave out about 100,000 backpacks total between their 300 stores.

The backpacks were filled with basic school supplies, including a pencil box, pencils, a notebook and colored pencils.

Employees say it is more than just giving away free backpacks.

"Just the kids are really excited," said Store Manager James Borlaug. "They come in shy but get their backpack and kind of light up and walk away with a big smile on their face. That's what counts."
