The city of Des Moines received a hefty grant to help add bike lanes to a busy street, but lack of support from the neighborhood means the money will go back to the state.

The Des Moines city council will rescind a grant for the project from the Iowa Department of Transportation at its Monday night meeting.

The city had received a $360,000 grant from the Iowa DOT to add bike lanes and re-stripe Hubbell Avenue. The project would have been similar to one completed successfully on Ingersoll Avenue.

The city hasn’t received support from area residents and businesses, so the re-striping plans are being scrapped.

The council will continue to monitor the area and study other options to improve safety.
