DES MOINES, Iowa – A new shopping center just south of Martin Luther King Junior Parkway is set to open this summer, and the developer says it’s set to bring life to an area so far shunned by businesses.
“What we’ve needed is some kind of retail south of MLK. We’ve had the residential – we have several residential projects, but there’s no place to go and enjoy and entertain yourself,” said Rich Eychaner of Eychaner Properties, Inc.
Eychaner’s company is currently developing “300MLK” – a shopping center set to house several restaurants, high-end retail stores, and office space. Eychaner says a few of the restaurants are brand-new to the Des Moines area, though he can’t reveal their identities just yet. What is known so far about the project is that two-thirds of the north building are taken by tenants; four restaurants on the first floor, with patio-seating along 3rd Street off MLK, Anytime Fitness on the second floor, a bar and rooftop lounge on the third floor, and a still-vacant fourth level. Two south buildings are mostly available for businesses, but Eychaner says his company is working on securing a few tenants already.
“Now we’ll have those facilities [south of MLK], outside of baseball season. And during baseball season, you’ll have another 600,000 people coming down for baseball games. So it’s going to be a very exciting place for people to gather,” he said.
Construction is on-going, but the property will look like its renderings by May, Eychaner says. Tenants will begin moving in then, and he expects the shopping center to be fully active by June. Information on available space at the property can be found on 300MLK’s Facebook page.
