Simpson College has a new leader. The Board of Trustees enthusiastically approved the appointment of a new President during its meeting Monday.

The Indinaola school named Jay Simmons the 23rd president of the College in its 152 year history.

Simmons replaces John Byrd who is retiring after eight years at Simpson.

Simmons is currently the president at Iowa Weslyan College in Mount Pleasant. His transition into the position will officially occur at the end of May.

The board came to their decision following a nationwide search.

Simmons holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Birmingham-Southern College and both Master’s and Doctorate degrees in political science from the University of Alabama. He and his wife, Jenne’, have two children, Samantha, a college senior, and Madison, a high school sophomore.

A welcome reception on the Simpson College campus is being planned when students resume classes in January.
