IOWA CITY, Iowa- The New Hancher Auditorium is completed and opening for public tours. The former Hancher Auditorium was flooded in 2008.
After the Federal Emergency Management Administration determined the old Hancher was more than 50% destroyed by the floods, that made the project to rebuild eligible for federal funding.
The new Hancher costs $175 Million to build. Federal dollars, along with University of Iowa funds, and donors helped to build the new structure.
Executive Director Chuck Swanson said he enjoys taking people inside for the first time to get their “wow!” reaction.
Swanson said the designer of the light features inside the venue are like none other anywhere in the world.
Hancher will hold an open house tour on Sunday from 2-5pm.
