MARION COUNTY, Iowa — Neighbors are sharing their shock and sadness over the death of a 68-year-old grandmother.
Shirley Carter was found shot to death inside her home in rural Lacona on Friday.
“Shirley Carter was the nicest person you’d ever want to meet,” neighbor Kyle Phillips said.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is investigating her death. About half a dozen other agencies, including DCI, are assisting. Authorities have yet to name a suspect or make an arrest in the case.
“My wife called me and told me about it sobbing. I could hardly understand her,” Phillips said.
He says he can’t imagine why anyone would want to hurt let alone kill the hardworking farm wife and loving mom and grandma.
Investigators don’t believe the public is in any danger but that does little to calm the nerves of neighbors.
“I don’t know what to think about it. A woman is dead and they say don’t worry?” Phillips said.
Authorities say they are conducting interviews and actively working the case. They will provide any updates when available.
