NATIONAL GUARD: Historical Promotion

An Indianola woman made history Sunday with her promotion in the Iowa National Guard.

Col. Jennifer L. Walter of the 132nd Fighter Wing became the first female Iowa Air National Guard Brigadier General.

She will now assume duties as the Chief of Staff.

Walter joined the guard in 1975, since then she has deployed as part of Operation Southern Watch to Al Jaber Air Base, Kuwait and as the 755th Air Expeditionary Group Commander at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan.

In her most recent position Walter served as the 132nd Fighter Wing’s Vice Wing Commander, providing command and control for more than 970 personnel and 21 F-16 “Fighting Falcon” aircraft.

In her 37 year career as an enlisted airmen Walter has won the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Award, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
