Des Moines native, Michael Annett kicked off his NASCAR season Saturday but it didn’t go to plan.

Annett was one of four drivers involved in a wreck on lap 116 of the Nationwide race in Daytona.

The three other drivers were treated and released at the track. Annett was hospitalized with chest and sternum injuries. He was treated at the hospital for bruising to his chest and underwent a CT scan and remains hospitalized for observation.

Just a few moments after that crash on the final lap, more than a dozen cars were involved in another crash. Kyle Larson’s car went airborne slamming into the fence designed to protect fans.

Larson walked away from the crash unharmed.

Debris including a tire pelted the crowd injuring at least 28 people. Fourteen fans were hospitalized. Two, including a child, are said to be in a critical but stable condition.
