LINN COUNTY, Iowa -- The man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and sparking an Amber Alert earlier this week made his first court appearance Friday morning.

Shaun Hogan appeared via video conference in Linn County. He is charged with first degree murder for the death of Crystal Gaffney. An autopsy shows she died of head trauma.

Gaffney's uncle was in the courtroom Friday and spoke about Hogan.

“He showed no remorse on his face at all, a matter of fact he was smiling into the camera. He had no remorse for my niece’s death,” says John Maynard.

The judge set Hogan's bond at $1 million.
