The latest shooting happened sometime between Friday and Saturday night on the metro’s south side

Around 5:30 Saturday night, police were called to check on a body at an apartment complex located at 423 East Philip in Des Moines.

When they arrived, they found 27 year old Gerald Bonner with a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Saturday afternoon, police asked for the public’s assistance in locating Bonner because he was missing and had a medical condition.

A few hours later, they found Bonner dead.

Police quickly identified a suspect and took him into custody.

“This appears to be the only suspect involved in the case. We did locate his gun last night. We don’t feel there are any accomplices to the suspect. A lot of the evidence we require for an investigation has been found,” said Sgt. Jason Halifax, the public information officer for the Des Moines Police Department.

The suspect, 27 year old John Edwards of Des Moines is at the Polk County Jail charged with first degree murder.

Investigators believe the two did know each other, but have not released a motive.
