After serving 13 years in prison for a vicious assault, a Muscatine man could be heading back to prison for the same crime.

In 1990, Hiram Serrano attacked Theresa Jackson slashing her neck and severing a nerve that left her a quadriplegic.

Serrano was sentenced to 35 years in prison for the attack, but served just 13 years.

He has been free from prison for the last eight years.

Theresa Jackson passed away in October; authorities say her death was the result of medical conditions caused by the attack.

Thursday, Serrano was arrested and charged with first degree murder. If he is convicted, he’ll spend the rest of his life behind bars.
