NEW VIRGINIA, Iowa — Firefighters said there was nothing they could do to save a home in New Virginia after it became engulfed in flames Thursday afternoon.
Crews from New Virginia, St. Marys and Indianola responded to a residence on 80th Avenue just after 2:30 p.m. after a neighbor reported seeing heavy smoke and flames coming from the house.
The home was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, who were on scene for several hours.
Neighbor Sheila Cleme said the fire is another tragedy for the family who lived in the home.
“It’s a very sad, sad thing. She lost her husband this year, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and now this,” Cleme said.
No one was home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.
