An Oklahoma woman will spend up to 50 years in prison for killing her newborn child in Iowa.

Hillary Tyler was sentenced to the maximum penalty Friday in Fort Dodge.

In February she was convicted of second degree murder. She didn’t testify in that hearing and also declined to address the court Friday,

Tyler drowned her newborn son in a bathtub at a Fort Dodge hotel in September 2011. The father of the child, Rodney Cyphers was present in the court room. He made a short statement saying, “You only had to say three words to me; ‘Rodney, I’m pregnant.'”

The Fort Dodge Messenger quoted Judge Thomas Bice saying, “In 41 years of being involved in the legal profession, this case, beyond all others, screams of heartache,” Adding that it was, “heartache not only for the family of [father] Rodney Cyphers, but for your family as well.”

Tyler must serve 35 years before she is eligible for parole and was ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution to the Cyphers family.
