WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – New video provided to WHO 13 by a witness captured the moment gunfire rang out at a carnival outside Valley West Mall Wednesday night.

No one was injured by gunfire but one male did suffer injuries after being assaulted, according to Sgt. Jason Bryan with the West Des Moines Police Department. Police initially said the person had been trampled as people fled from the shooting but after investigating they determined he was assaulted by a group of males.

The shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. but Sgt. Bryan said police had already been called to the carnival earlier for a fight.

Police say a second fight broke out later and that’s when the male victim was assaulted. While an officer was coming to break up that fight, a suspect pulled out a gun and fired it into the air.

Investigators did recover one firearm at the scene.

Alexis Fineran was at the carnival with a friend and was recording on her phone when the shooting happened. The video shows people in the distance fighting and then gunshots are heard. The crowd starts to scatter and Fineran and her friend, who were looking down on the scene from a platform on a carnival attraction, hit the deck in fear.

Fineran described the situation as “traumatizing.”

The West Des Moines Police Department is expected to provide more details on the incident later Thursday.
