Police in Taylor County have scaled back the search for an escaped convict who shot a sheriff's deputy.

Police are searching for 38-year old Rodney Long, who escaped from the Clarinda Correctional Facility Friday.

Long was spotted walking along Highway 2 just east of New Market Sunday night, but when a deputy tried to stop Long, police say Long opened fire, hitting the deputy twice.

The officer is expected to survive.

Police say Long then stole the deputy's patrol vehicle, leading police on a 40-minute chase that ended when he crashed. Long then took off into a cornfield, sparking the massive manhunt.

Police are asking neighbors to keep doors and windows locked, and to keep keys out of cars.  "We urge the public to remain very cautious." says Special Agent Mitch Mortvedt with the Iowa DCI,  "We're not trying to alarm anyone.  But in the same breath he's an escaped convicted felon.  And he's already shot one officer."

Police say Long is considered armed and dangerous.  If anyone in the area sees anything suspicious, they’re asked to call 9-1-1.
