POLK COUNTY, Iowa – Officials say the man injured when he was hit by a car Wednesday morning had been released from the Polk County Jail a little over an hour before the accident happened.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said a 911 call came in just after 4:30 a.m. about someone who had been hit by a car in the 4900 block of NE 22nd Street. When deputies arrived on the scene, they found 52-year-old Mario Ramirez suffering from several non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators say he was walking south on the east side of the road when he was hit.

The driver of the car, 25-year-old William Birt, had been driving south. Birt called 911 immediately after the accident.

Online records show Ramirez had been released from the nearby Polk County Jail at 3:22 a.m. Wednesday.

Investigators say the incident appears to be an accident and no charges will be filed against Birt.
