DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man is behind bars after police say he used a shovel to damage multiple vehicles and kill chickens in an east Des Moines neighborhood.

Des Moines police were called to the area of Capitol Avenue and East 27th Street shortly after 2 p.m. Friday.

Police chased down and arrested 31-year-old Anthony Runner. According to police, he damaged 6-7 vehicles with a shovel and killed at least four chickens.

“By the time I hit the door and come down this way he jumped off and the bike fell and swung it at me and I yelled at him, ‘give me my shovel,’ and he threw it at me so picked it up and chased him down the alley and tried to throw it at him a couple times and he just laughed at me and took off and I said ‘karma,’” said Debbie Hood, a victim of the vandalism.

“I`m hurt because this happened to my husband’s bike and it was just, I don`t know, the first brand new bike he ever bought, and now this happens and it`s going to be a while before we can repair anything,” said Hood.

Runner faces four counts of animal abuse, four counts of criminal mischief, assault while displaying a weapon, interference with official acts and theft.
