A fire that started one week ago at an Iowa City landfill is still burning and now the city’s mayor is calling the situation a local emergency.
The fire started last Saturday evening at the landfill, officials said the flames were too difficult to fight and decided to let it burn.
But a shift in winds could direct is plume of smoke towards more populated areas of Iowa City causing concern for the health of people in the community.
Iowa City’s mayor signed a document declaring the landfill fire there a local emergency.
The declaration by the mayor allows the city to seek funding from state and national resources down the road.
Right now the estimated damage from the fire is around $5 million.
