WEST DES MOINES, Iowa -- Over 100 Kum & Go executives and associates defied the windy conditions Tuesday to partner with Habitat for Humanity and build the frame for a house to benefit a Des Moines family.
"Today we have the opportunity to build a series of walls for a home on the East side of Des Moines. It's a way that we could get our office associates involved in the project," said Megan Elfer, Vice President of Marketing and Communications for Kum & Go. "We partnered with Habitat last year, and more associates wanted to be involved, and we wanted to have a bigger impact in the community."
Kum & Go representatives say the company gives 10 percent of its profits back to the communities where it has stores. Last year was the first year the company partnered with Habitat for Humanity on a national scale, running a fundraising campaign that resulted in a Habitat home being built for a family in need in North Dakota - where the most money was raised.
This year, Kum & Go plans to build another home for a family in need, but employees in Des Moines requested to get more involved through a local build here in West Des Moines.
