An Ames elementary school presented a big check to a little girl Monday morning.
Mitchell Elementary School students raised more than $1,800 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. That money will help fund research to find a cure for blood cancers.
Lilly Winterbottom was on hand for the presentation. She was diagnosed with leukemia two years ago. She’s cancer free today, thanks to new treatments and a bone marrow transplant.
“As soon as the students found out last week Lilly was coming, that was just the highlight of the day. Kindergartners asking when their new friend is coming to their class. Just the excitement of actually putting a real face to our hero,” said third grade teacher Jenni Pudenz.
The students also gave Lilly a stack of letters and drawings to take home.
