DES MOINES, Iowa — Snow plows have been at work around the clock since the snow started falling early Monday.

Jonathan Gano, of Des Moines Public Works, says plows are about halfway down plowing Des Moines’ residential streets as of Tuesday afternoon. He hopes to have all residential streets plowed by dinner time Tuesday.

Gano also said the plows also drop salt on roads while at work, so Wednesday’s light snow should not affect the roads too much.

But when a storm like Monday’s does hit again, a new tool from the Iowa Department of Transportation allows users to track snow plows anywhere in the state in real-time. Some of the vehicles are equipped with cameras to show live images from the plows.

The map shows current road conditions in addition to weather warnings and watches. Visit to see the snow plows in your area.
