DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Public Health is out with a new report on diseases in the state last year. The annual report and compares the previous year to a three-year average for certain diseases.
Last year Iowa saw a more than a 500-percent increase in cases of Marlow syndrome, a food-borne illness.
Cases of cryptosporidium sickness were up 300-percent. You’ll remember the outbreak of that disease at public pools last summer.
Cases of Lyme Disease in the state also doubled from the 3-year average in 2013.
There were also big increases in cases of syphilis and hepatitis-A.
The report had some good news, especially for parents. Reported cases of mumps were down 82-percent.
Whooping cough cases also saw a decrease and were down 65-percent.
