DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowans have already raised millions of dollars through a popular fundraising site.

Since it began in 2010, Iowans have started more than 15,000 campaigns through GoFundMe, raising more than $13 million.

The Des Moines metro area had more than 1,900 fundraisers created last year. Those campaigns have raised almost $2 million.

One of the most recent uses of GoFundMe has been to help Central Campus students recreate a mural that was painted over by the city. Since launching the fundraiser on May 17, the students have reached their goal of $4,000.

GoFundMe deducts a 5 percent fee from each donation to cover its costs.
