DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate announced a new tool Monday for Iowans registering to vote.

The new system allows you to register to vote or update your registration online using an Iowa Department of Transportation computer system.

To do so, Iowans must have a valid driver’s license or another form of identification issued by the DOT. Critics argue that not everyone has a driver’s license, so the system can be discriminatory.

Pate said the system is a perfect solution for many, however, it’s not intended to be an answer for everyone.

“If you look at the six options that we already offer, one of them will work. We’re trying to make it more convenient … we’re not going to exclude anybody,” he said.

Pate also offered one important reminder to Iowans.

“We have a bigger problem, and that is participation,” he said.

Pate said that while he’s doing all he can to make sure a record number of Iowans can vote, it’s up to the voter to actually go out and do it.
