CLIVE, Iowa -- A Sioux City man came close to raking in the almost billion-dollar jackpot over the weekend.
Iowa Lottery officials say 23-year-old Joel Dominguez’s ticket matched the first five numbers of Saturday’s record $947.9 million jackpot, he but missed the Powerball. So instead, he’ll go home with $1 million.
Dominguez bought his winning ticket at Hy-Vee located at 3301 Gordon Drive in Sioux City. Lottery officials said Hy-Vee will receive a $1,000 bonus from the lottery for selling the $1 million-winning ticket.
Dominguez claimed his $1 million prize at the lottery headquarters in Clive on Monday and told lottery officials he plans to use his lottery winnings to help his family, pay bills and pay to complete his and his wife’s college degrees.
Since no one has come forward with a ticket that matches all six numbers, Wednesday's lottery prize has jumped to an estimated $1.4 billion annuity or $868 million cash option.
