DES MOINES, Iowa — Attacking a law enforcement officer in Iowa could be considered a hate crime under proposed “Blue Lives Matter” legislation.

Representative Ken Rizer says he plans to introduce the bill during the 2017 legislative session. He wants to create stiffer penalties for people who attack officers.

Rizer says the idea for the bill stems from the recent targeting of law enforcement across the country.

Other Iowa lawmakers argue the state already has strong penalties in place.
