ALTOONA, Iowa – One person is dead in an officer-involved shooting that began with a pursuit early Tuesday morning.

Lt. Rich Blaylock with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office says the incident began around 3:45 a.m. in the 8700 block of NE 62nd Ave., just north of Altoona, when a deputy performed a traffic stop. The vehicle initially stopped but the male driver appeared nervous and took off as a deputy approached.

The chase ended in a cul-de-sac in the 200 block of 5th St. NW  when the suspect jumped out of the vehicle. Lt. Blaylock says the suspect appeared to have a weapon in his hand. Deputies on scene told the suspect to drop the weapon but he did not comply and one of the two deputies fired on the suspect, striking him. The suspect died from his injuries.

No information on how many shots were fired has been released.

The suspect’s name is not being released at this time.

Officers from the Altoona and Pleasant Hill police departments assisted in the case. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is assisting with the investigation as well.
