For years, Iowa businessman Bill Knapp has been one of the biggest donors to Democratic candidates in the state. But the founder of Iowa Realty, who is now chairman emeritus of Knapp Properties, decided he isn’t writing checks for a Democratic candidate in the race for governor. Instead, he told Channel 13 he is putting his money behind Republican Governor Terry Branstad. Knapp said, “I have never seen anyone who cares about Iowa more than Branstad. He has a love for Iowa. He does everything he can to make it a better state. And so I don’t care who’s running again him, whether a Democrat or Independent.”
Knapp admits he hasn’t financially backed many Republicans in the past. Knapp backed Branstad, even though there are three Democrats seeking the nomination: State Senator Jack Hatch of Des Moines, State Representative Tyler Olson of Cedar Rapids and former State Representative Bob Krause of Des Moines.
Knapp shares more on his support for Branstad, why he isn’t putting his money behind former Democratic Governor Chet Culver like he has in the past and why he thinks if you invest in gold, you are betting against the country. Watch more here from Knapp in an exclusive conversation on Channel 13’s “The Insiders.”
