A special graduation was held Friday for 38 female prison inmates.
The inmates graduated from DMACC after taking classes in prison. A total of 41 students earned GEDs and 16 earned their high school diplomas. Families of the graduating inmates were in attendance to support their loved one’s accomplishment.
“You don’t have to raise your hand but some of you probably thought this would never happen. So school wasn’t always a pleasant memory for some of our women but for them to come back to school, here, and get a real GED means just as much as it does on the streets, a huge accomplishment,” says Warden Patti Wachtendorf.
