A hunting accident Wednesday caused serious injuries to a Cumming man’s hand.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says 69-year-old Theodore Larsen was hunting from a stand south of Truro when his muzzleloader exploded in his hands while he was trying to shoot a deer. The blast severed his thumb and it couldn’t be found.

Larsen was taken by air ambulance to Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

The Iowa DNR is still looking into the incident to determine why the muzzleloader exploded.
