Fire investigators are looking into what started an overnight fire in an east side Des Moines home.

Police called in the fire at 2437 Maple Street around 1:00 a.m. Monday. An officer driving by noticed smoke coming from the roof. The officer was able to get three people out of the home and no one was injured.

The Des Moines Fire Department says the fire was contained to the attic but there was significant water damage to the home.

Firefighters say the cold and snow didn’t make putting out the flames any more difficult.

“Well, we’ve been out in it all day so we’re kind of used to the roads and all that. No, there wasn’t any specific challenge. We’re kind of used to this,” says Cpt. Dave Burford.

Because the damage was contained to the attic it was not clear if the homeowners could return to the home. Burford says if they can’t the Red Cross would be called in to help.
