GRINNELL, Iowa -- Wednesday saw Iowans participate in the Healthiest State Initiative Walk. This is an effort to get everyone out and moving. In Grinnell, at St. Francis Manor, the challenge was accepted, even by those who can't walk.
Dozens of volunteers came out to help push the wheel chairs of residents around the campus of the nursing home.
"It was wonderful, made us feel so good to get outside, it was just a wonderful thing to do," said Eileen Larsen. She said it reminded her of the past when she used to help her husband with chores raising hogs on a farm. "It was just a wonderful walk the weather was so good," she said beaming, as residents gathered for snacks and social time afterwards.
"Like gettin' out of school," Velma Nelson said as she laughed. "I hadn't been outside for anything like this for over a year because of my health," she added.
Kristin Kahn organized the walk. "Each year we do a fun run and walk, a buddy walk," she said. This year that day was too cold, so they moved it to coincide with the state-wide event. "We do exercises with them every week," added Kahn. "We have them do what they're able to do," she added.
