DES MOINES, Iowa — A bill to legalize gun suppressors in Iowa cleared the Senate Thursday.

Lawmakers voted 46 to 4 to pass the measure.

Suppressors are legal for hunters and sports shooters in 41 states. The Iowa Firearms Coalition is working with lawmakers on the bill.

Supporters of the bill say suppressors provide valuable hearing protection.

Experts say to think of firearm suppressor like a muffler on your car.

“You’re generally going to decrease the sound level by about 20 to 35 decibels, which is a significant reduction,” said Knox Williams, of the American Suppressor Association.

But opponents see it as a weapon and say shooters can use ear protection instead.

The bill now goes back to the House, which passed the legislation in February.
