Some students at Valley High School are working to make the holidays a little greener.

The Valley Recycling club is putting out bins across West Des Moines to collect old or broken Christmas lights.

Club members tracked down a company in Texas that recycles the lights and gives the money to the charity Toys for Tots.

Club members say they're anticipating a great response.

“Almost everyone I've talked to has gone 'oh my goodness, I just put up my Christmas tree. I have like five strings of dead lights to bring in. Tell me where the bins are .' So we actually put out more bins than we initially thought we were going to,” said club President Sarah Curran.

The bins are out at eight locations in West Des Moines and Clive.

The club says it's still in need of a sponsor to help cover the cost of shipping the lights.
