DES MOINES, Iowa — Every year Black Friday starts earlier and earlier, and now many stores actually start on “Gray Thursday” or Thanksgiving.

Most stores opened Thursday around 6 p.m. , but many stores this year are not staying open overnight.

Jordan Creek Mall was one of the few malls open overnight. Officials say they had a steady flow of traffic till 3 a.m. and they expect to see a new batch of shoppers come in between eight and ten this morning.

The National Retail Federation expects consumers will spend 617 billion dollars this holiday season. That’s almost a five percent increase from last year. Some stores denounce opening before Black Friday because they say it ruins the holidays, but the early shoppers we spoke with told us this early opening was perfect. “We like to have our Thanksgiving at lunch time so you have time to take that little after Thanksgiving nap and then still be ready to go,” said Debra Jameson of West Des Moines.
