DES MOINES, Iowa – Downtown Des Moines will get a taste of a German Christmas over the weekend.

Cowles Commons is playing host to the Christkindlmarket, a Germen-themed outdoor market, whichwas put together by the Des Moines European Heritage Association.

The inaugural Christkindlmarket in Des Moines will feature traditional European foods, music, and unique gifts from vendors across the Midwest. Hot, spiced mulled wine, known as Glühwein, will be available along with a collectible mug.

The free event opens Friday at 11:00 a.m. and an opening ceremony is being held at 6:00 p.m. featuring the Christkind, a traditional giver of gifts. The event runs from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Saturday and 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.
