DES MOINES, Iowa — The president is asking Congress for a three year authorization of powers.  It would set new parameters for the US to follow as it tries to combat ISIS, the violent militant group that’s claimed territory in Iraq and Syria and has killed captives; the most recent being American Kayla Mueller.

The president’s request weighs heavily on the minds of current soldiers and veterans, like Air Guard Major General, Doug Pierce.

“The question you have to ask yourself is this a national security issue for the United States of America and I personally think it is.”

During last week’s Condition of the Guard address Major General Tim Orr announced the Iowa National Guard will not deploy any of its units overseas in 2015.

It’s the first time in 13 years an authorized use of military force has been requested. This one however would repeal the one made by President George W. Bush in 2002.

Pierce agrees with the request, “We have just withdrawn from Iraq and Afghanistan and the Middle East but it continues to be a thorn in our side but the only way you can stop it is to go in and deal with it.”

Some Iowa lawmakers are hesitant of the idea. Senator Chuck Grassley worries if the request is approved, the president will not follow through with his actions.

“Consequently this president has lost a loss of credibility around the world of what he is going to do militarily, whether he is going to use military power or even whether he is going to carry out threats because so many times he hasn’t.”

However, Grassley agrees ISIS is growing and must be stopped.

“When you look at the fact that ISIS that many of their personnel come Europe and even a few from the US, and they have passports to go home and they can be a threat domestically. It fits right into the number one responsibility of the federal government to protect the American people.”

The National Guard is the most prepared it’s ever been according to officials.
