MAXWELL, Iowa – Several fire departments were called in to battle a barn blaze north of Maxwell Wednesday morning.
The call came in just before 5:00 a.m. about a barn on fire at 31384 653rd Avenue. The Maxwell Fire Department had to call in help from three other departments – Collins, Cambridge, and Nevada. Water had to be trucked in because of the size of the fire.
Officials say when firefighters arrived it was apparent the barn could not be saved so they focused their efforts on saving nearby structures. They soaked the house and a nearby vehicle with water to keep the fire from spreading.
The horses were out in the field when the barn burned, so no animals were lost in the fire. Some vehicles and equipment inside were destroyed.
The main fire has been put out but because the barn contained a lot of hay, the hay continues to smolder.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
