DES MOINES, Iowa – One person was killed in a crash on Highway 5 Monday morning.

Crews were called shortly after 7:30 a.m. to an area near the Highway 65/69 interchange on an accident involving a tanker truck.

Trooper Alex Dinkla with the Iowa State Patrol says a pickup that was headed eastbound crossed the median and into oncoming traffic, hitting a Sweet Honey tanker truck. The driver of the pickup truck was ejected and died on scene.

A Waste Management truck then ran over some of the debris.

The drivers of the Sweet Honey and Waste Management trucks were not injured.

Investigators are not sure yet what caused the pickup truck driver to cross the median. The name of the deceased driver is not being released yet as officials work to notify his family members.

Both directions of Highway 5 between IA 28 and Highway 65/69 were blocked off  for several hours Monday morning while emergency crews cleared the scene and investigators gathered evidence. The northbound lanes were reopened around 10:45 a.m. and the southbound lanes reopened shortly after 11:00 a.m.
