The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of a man killed in a crash north of Bondurant Tuesday.

Officials say 53-year-old Kendall Johnson of Rhodes died in the accident, which wasn’t discovered until several hours after it happened.

Deputies found Johnson’s vehicle at the base of a tree in a yard along NE 94th Avenue around 8:40 p.m. Tuesday. Sgt. Jana Abens with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office says Johnson was on his way to work Tuesday morning when he went off the road.

Investigators noticed the damage done to the vehicle seemed to be excessive considering the path it had traveled. They say Johnson was driving west on 94th Avenue when he went through a ditch and part of a farm field before hitting the tree.

After expanding the search area of the scene, a dead horse was discovered in the south ditch of 94th Avenue. Investigators believe the horse was in the roadway Tuesday morning and Johnson’s vehicle struck it, causing the vehicle to leave the road.

The investigation into the accident continues and an autopsy is being performed later this week.
