One person is dead following a three vehicle accident involving a school bus in Jasper County Thursday.

Calls to 911 came in just after 4:00 p.m. about an accident on F-48 near Newgate Street, just east of Colfax. Jasper County Sheriff John Halferty says a car rear-ended a school bus at a bus stop and another vehicle rear-ended the car that hit the bus.

A DOT officer, a State Trooper, volunteer firefighters and several citizens tried to assist at the accident before the Colfax Fire Department arrived.

When firefighters got on scene they found the car that hit the bus was fully engulfed in flame. The rear end of the bus was also on fire. Colfax Assistant Fire Chief Brandon Bruxvoort says after the first fire truck arrived, the fire was under control after about six minutes.

No students were on the bus at the time of accident. The final student had just gotten off at the bus stop. The bus driver was treated on scene and released.

Officials say the driver of the car that hit the bus was pronounced dead on the scene. The name of the victim has not been released.

The two occupants of the vehicle that hit the car were treated on scene and released.

The investigation into what caused the accident continues.
