State senator Liz Mathis is asking the State Auditor to investigate payments made to the Secretary of State’s former chief deputy after his job was eliminated.

The Des Moines Register reported Secretary Schultz cut Jim Gibbons’ job in May of 2012 but Gibbons continued being paid through the end of the year. According to Mathis, that adds up to about $80,000.

Schultz has said Gibbons reported to the office regularly even though his duties were given to other staff members.

Mathis wants the auditor to look into Gibbons’ pay and duties in the seven-month period. She is asking for a response from the auditor by the end of May.
