The Iowa House and Senate will now have to find middle ground on education reform.

Tuesday night, the Democrat-controlled Senate approved its version of an education reform bill.

Democrats kept Gov. Terry Branstad’s idea of raising starting teacher pay to $35,000 and also included his plan for incentive pay for teachers who take on leadership roles.

The House Republican version passed earlier this year offers a smaller raise for starting teachers and makes the incentive pay system optional.

The Senate plan passed along party lines with a vote of 26 to 23.
