Iowa State University President Steven Leath isn’t sold on the latest pitch from Iowa lawmakers.

Des Moines State Senator Jack Hatch is pushing for a bill to create a higher education chancellor. The job would involve overseeing work at Iowa State, the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa.

Hatch believes the chancellor would provide better oversight of Iowa’s three universities.

President Leath believes otherwise telling the Ames Tribune, “One of the advantages Iowa has is that they have a relatively small, effective Board of Regents which provides a relatively flat system and allows us to be efficient. Anything that would add to the administrative layers, and add another layer of bureaucracy without a clear value, would be troublesome to me.”
