Construction officially began Friday on the first new school building to be constructed in Des Moines since 2007.

Officials and students gathered around the site of the new $10 million Edmunds Elementary.

The building will be located just north of the current school in the Sherman Hill neighborhood.

The project caught the attention of the state's education director.

Jason Glass said, "This community is really gonna have something special. You should be very excited. This will be a source of pride and a new heartbeat for this community."

Construction will begin during the first week of June.

It should be finished in time for the 2013-2014 school year.
