DES MOINES, Iowa- The first fair goers to the 2015 Iowa State Fair began arriving at 3:30 a.m. Thursday. The reason for the early hour was to be in line for a free breakfast.  In the past some early risers got free admission, but not this year.

The Cattlemen’s Beef Quarters offered up free breakfast to the first 50 people in line.  At 5 a.m, when the doors opened, there were not 50 people there, so some wished they could have slept longer.

WHO Radio’s Van and Bonnie were broadcasting from the breakfast, they will return to the normal WHO Crystal Studio for the rest of the fair.

“I’ve been to the fair almost 60 years,” said Joy Evans of Bloomfield.  She was able to get here very early, as she is camping at the Fair.  “The Fair is our vacation, it’s what we do as a family.”

Even two teenage girls from Johnson County came to the breakfast.  They were getting their dairy cattle ready for a show Thursday morning.

“Our show is this morning, we have to get ready so we’re up anyway,” said Kara Schueler.

“Got up early to prepare, and there’s free food, so we thought we’d come,” said Gabby Klemme.

“Welcome everyone, this is a lot of fun, the first day of the Iowa State Fair,” WHO Radio’s Van Harden told listeners and people at the breakfast. “To be able to be at a place like this is even more special.”

For those who did not make the free breakfast, the Cattlemen’s Beef Quarters was offering half price breakfast for $5.00 until around 10 a.m. Thursday.
