We have had some “fowl” weather Saturday but that didn’t stop the 6th annual Duck Derby at Jordan Creek Town Center in West Des Moines.

42,000 ducks were dumped into the lake at the mall.

“We`ve been going out here for 5 years now, and we always buy our ducks, and our t-shirts and our hats, and paraphernalia,” said participant Cassie Kitterman.

The annual event, sponsored by Channel 13, raises money for Youth Emergency Services and Shelter.

YESS helps provide shelter to children from birth to age seventeen, and cares for up to one-thousand children a year.

“Everything from the shelter benefits from the Duck Derby, we have a counseling program and we have lots of recreational opportunities for the kids, in essence we just try to provide the best experience when kids can`t be at a home, we`re a good place when home is not an option,” explained Executive Director Stephen Quirk.

Quirk said the event helped raise $350,000 for the organization.
