If you’re planning to do some boating this weekend you’ll notice more company on the water.

Operation Dry Water begins Friday and runs through Sunday. It’s an effort to draw attention to the hazards of boating while under the influence.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has partnered with the U.S. Coast Guard, the Army Corps of Engineers, and local sheriff’s departments to increase patrols, conduct check points, and administer breath tests.

The legal limit for blood alcohol content in Iowa is the same for boaters as it is for drivers — .08 percent.

Authorities say more than 70-percent of Iowa’s boating fatalities last year involved alcohol.

During last year’s Operation Dry Water authorities issued more 136 citations.
