DES MOINES, Iowa — A 17-year-old boy has been charged with murder after killing his grandmother, police say.

According to the Des Moines Police Department, officers responded to 3924 East 30th Street at approximately 11:20 p.m. on Saturday to investigate a reported assault.

Authorities found the victim, 79-year-old Rachel Pray of Des Moines, deceased inside the home.

Police say the 17-year-old, Noah Laprei of Des Moines, is being detained and charged with first-degree murder pending waiver to adult court. Larpei is the grandson of Pray.

Neighbors across the street from the home say Laprei was acting out of character when he came pounding on their door at approximately 11:15 Saturday night, and they believe he was under the influence of drugs.

This is the city’s 13th homicide of 2015.

Further updates on the investigation are expected, according to police.
