DES MOINES, Iowa -- A Des Moines school bus driver says an intersection needs a traffic light due to lack of safety.

The driver says the intersection at MLK Pkwy and Prospect Road is so dangerous, it's just a matter of time before somebody gets killed. He's asking the City to install a $150,000 traffic light.

"It’s a very dangerous intersection and there have been a lot of major crashes there,” Kurt Bowermaster said. “One of the employees of the bus garage about six years ago had a very major accident when she was rear ended by a truck and she's had $40,000 in medical bills and her life is changed forever."

Bowermaster says drivers are forbidden from turning left onto MLK because of the danger, so they have to turn right and then turn around. He says the estimated cost in wasted fuel because of that extra trip is about $15,000 per year.

City Council members are looking into the idea.
